Development of a Proposal for the Implementation of a Medical Technology Wireless Data Network for St. Mary Hospital

Week 5: Sept 11, 2005

Tasks

Provide the status of the task. If stalled or changed, state why. What did you accomplish this week that is in line with your scheduled tasks?

Task 1: Seek feedback from the Stakeholder. [Completed]

I presented my project proposal to Keith Miller and he provided positive feedback and thought it would be beneficial to St. Mary Mercy Hospital and our MTS department. Since Keith has followed this project since its inception he only added that I did a good job.

Task 2: Obtain Proposal signoff from Keith Miller. [Completed]

After final review Keith signed off the project and I inserted the document in Appendix B

Task 3: Review / Lessons learned. [Completed]

I completed a review in conjunction with the feedback provided by the project stakeholder and project beneficiaries; the results can be seen in the learning section below.

Decisions

What came up that needed to be addressed? Did you run into a problem or roadblock? How did you solve it? What important decisions did you make this week that impacted your project?

Since this was the final week of the project the only problem was a short work week due to the holiday. I solved this problem and decided to work ahead and provide Keith Miller an advanced copy of the project for review. This gave him time to review the project and keep up with his work responsibilities.

Learning

1) What helpful feedback did you get in the class (instructor, classmates) and outside the class (user, stakeholder, beneficiary, mentor, expert advisor, others)? What did you gain from this feedback?

Keith advised me to get an outside opinion concerning the final project proposal. Because of time restraints I asked my wife to review the whole project. She found several spelling and grammar errors and a couple of inconsistencies. From this feedback I was able to make corrections and learned not to rely on spell checkers. I also understand the value of reading your work out loud.

2) What resources did you use this week (e.g., people, money, equipment, systems, or software)? Did you add new resources? What was your learning?

I used the NNSA lessons learned checklist to help me analyze my projects success and shortcomings. This article supported Keith Millers feedback method by relating to past experiences. I learned that providing real examples is a good way to provide feedback. I also learned that there should be a methodology in place to evaluate, document and follow-up lessons learned. I learned that lessons learned are not learned unless they are shared.

This document is extensive but will serve as an example and be used as a basic guideline to assess my projects success and lessons learned

I added the document referenced below to my research that describes a lessons learned method. This helped me develop a method even within the small scope of my project proposal. I learned that to complete a lessons learned document you must include the things that went right as well as the things that went wrong. I retrieved the document September 5, 2005 here:

3) What research did you perform this week that was assisting and/or literature based? What was your learning?

This week I used the book Project Management by Clifford F. Grey. This book taught me about a more complex level of project review. On a larger project a project might be audited by a third party. A project would also be reviewed by the team and managers before being signed off by the stakeholder. The team and managers performance should also be reviewed. For a project of this size the book also emphasized the need to find and review both the good and bad and provide possible solutions so that future developers can learn from your mistakes and success.

Indicators

1) How well did you stick to your project schedule?

I completed the project according to schedule and as planned.

2) How prepared are you to conclude your project in Unit 10 as required in this course?

The project will be completed by the end of Unit 10.

3) How likely is it that you will need to resort to your contingency plan?

I will not resort to my contingency plan.
